Omega Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated is an organization focused on raising the awareness of violence against women. ... read more
Since its inception in 1989, Omega Phi Beta has worked tirelessly to fight against the injustices historically suffered by women of all backgrounds. This organization strives to promote professionalism, compassion, and understanding while at the same time educating the community. I am constantly inspired by Omega Phi Beta every day. I was fortunate enough to have exceptional women on my campus that sparked my interest in the organization. I never thought there could be a group of women who were so dedicated, selfless and focused on empowerment and outreach. Even more so, I realized that this dedication extends to every chapter and every member of the organization. These women all have personal and professional lives, however they make it their duty to never forget their roots and to never forget the struggles of the women who set the foundation before them. Every woman in this organization knows that they are able to be successful because of the struggles of the women who came before them. It is because of this that every woman in the organization prides themselves on giving back to the community. Every sister understands that in today's world, similar to the past, women are a delicate commodity often misused and abused. Therefore it is necessary to educate the community about past and present injustices in order to build a better tomorrow.

I know that women must step up and take care of their own sexual health needs. Our area is not open or accepting when it comes to this issue, and I would love to be able to distribute these compacts not only in the hopes of helping women protect themselves, but to also make a statement about how important it is to broach these topics in our community. I would make the compacts available to our substance abuse unit, to women at WIC clinics, at our local community college, and to our patients at large.

I truly hope that I make a difference in a young girl's life, by supplying her with information, supplies and support as she journeys through her sexuality. I once thought (in my lifetime I'm 56) only men carried condoms and they only wanted one thing----SEX, now as I counsel young females, I tell them they need to think of their own health and be caretakers for their bodies. Carrying a condom is not just for MEN, our young female population needs to protect themselves by saying "wait a minute" and flash the condom package and stand up their sexual well-being and insist on the use of a condom. To end, my daughter came to me, as a junior in high school and told me the 'condom' broke, she was pregnant. I didn't even want her to know what a condom was, to this day and this day forward I plan to educate the sexually active population of clients who are seeking to prevent an undesired pregnancy. I know first hand the importance of educating where ever we can-clinic settings, schools, churches, etc. It is hard to give a young person the options of abortion, adoption or becoming a parent at a very young age. Education is powerful and ABSTINENCE is not working. When I am in the school setting and teaching aboutSTDs, I tell the students A isn't for apple, B isn't for ball and C isn't for cat anymore, at this time of your lives---- A stands for abstinence, B is for being faithful, stay in a relationship where you are both disease free and C is for CONDOM. Thanks for taking the time to read this submission to nominate NEICAC for the 100 free 'just in case' cases. We'll continue to educate and care for these young people here in northeast Iowa.
